ABOUT US
The Akube Oretin Development Association is a 501(c)(3) organization founded and operated by dedicated members of the Nigerian diaspora community. Our organization was founded by Nigerians living in America with a shared goal: to maintain solidarity, preserve cultural heritage, and provide mutual support in their new home.
Initially, members gathered from house to house to reminisce about life in Nigeria and discuss ways to uplift one another and guide the next generation. Recognizing the need for a dedicated space, they pooled resources to purchase a building that now serves as the central hub for meetings, cultural events, and community initiatives.
Its mission is to safeguard and celebrate Edo cultural heritage by offering community members opportunities to engage with and learn about traditions through activities, events, exhibitions, and classes that span multiple generations.
The initiative involves transforming an existing church in Markham, IL, into an Event, Culture, and Art Center. The project encompasses a total area of 9,400 square feet and includes a versatile event space along with supporting facilities such as offices, meeting rooms, utility rooms, bathrooms, and an exhibition lobby. The venue will be expanded to accommodate 450 people. This transformation will occur in two phases: the ongoing renovation of the current space and the expansion, which will feature a glass connection between the existing event spaces, a fully glass enclosure serving dual exhibition and entry lobby functions, and a new facade.
In addition to its cultural promotion role, the center will host a distinctive exhibition showcasing internationally acclaimed authentic African and Bronze art created by the Edo people and the Benin Nation of Africa. The Akugbe-Oretin Development Association has established connections that will allow replicas of the Benin Bronzes to be imported directly from Nigeria for display at the Akugbe-Oretin Event, Culture, and Arts Center. This exhibition will narrate the story of the Edo people and the Benin Empire, highlighting its art, craftsmanship, international trade achievements, progressive governance, and faith that contributed to its unmatched success. It will present an inspiring historical account that has not been widely shared until now.
